Fort Worth Museum of Science and History

Established in 1941 as the Fort Worth Children's Museum, the renamed Fort Worth Museum of Science and History provides hundreds of programs aimed at engaging children and families in learning. In addition to its Omni Theater, the Museum features four core exhibit galleries; a special exhibit hall; DinoDig, an outdoor dig; the Noble Planetarium; KIDSPACE; and a distinguished Museum School. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is a leader in informal science education.

In 1939, the local council of Administrative Women in Education began a study of children's museums, with the idea of promoting one in Fort Worth. A charter was obtained in 1941 for an association to administer the newly formed Fort Worth Children's Museum. Through the efforts of the city's school board, a two-room museum in the De Zavala Elementary School in Fort Worth opened in early 1945. In 1947 the Museum moved into the large R. E. Harding House at 1306 Summit, where it continued to grow in size and popularity.

The citizens of Fort Worth supported a total sale of $500,000 in bonds in 1945 and 1951 to finance the construction of the present building, which opened January 25, 1954. The next year the Charlie Mary Noble Planetarium opened. In 1968 the Museum became the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. The Omni Theater was added in 1983.

Today, the museum attracts approximately one million guests annually, making it one of North Texas' most popular cultural attractions.
