SceneShop

SceneShop is a showcase for short dramatic works – scenes, monologues, excerpts from larger works – written by local and regional writers. These works are performed by a core of regulars and often feature guest turns by some of the area's most gifted performers. With a focus on simple staging and casual ambiance, SceneShop has earned consistently positive reviews and a loyal following. Each edition promises a variety of works – comic, serious, thoughtful, sometimes silly – that comprises a memorable, intimate evening of theatre.

Now a 501(c)(3) organization, SceneShop was founded in 1996 by Les Cargot, Elizabeth Sexton-Morrison and Steven Alan McGaw. Charles Baker came aboard as a performer in 1998 and later joined on as a producer, as did frequent contributor Natalie Gaupp and performer/director Melodee Halbach. Since the first show, the emphasis of the 'Shop has been on writing and simple presentation of the short works selected. Nearly 100 scenes or monologues have been produced by SceneShop since it began, with a long list of playwrights and performers lending their talents.

Billing itself as a "mobile theatrical showcase," SceneShop has performed in bars, cafes, art galleries and other alternative spaces. Since 2001, the troupe has been seen most frequently at Arts Fifth Avenue where they present their wildly popular annual holiday show, "A Fifth of Christmas." The 'Shop is also a regular participant in the prestigious Out of the Loop Festival, hosted each Spring by the WaterTower Theatre in Addison.
