The Medici Popes (2004, 60 min., DVD) recreates the turbulent decades under the rule of Popes Leo X (Giovanni de Medici) and Clement VII (Giulio de Medici). Soon after his election, Leo enlists Michelangelo to build the family tombs in Florence, where the Medici have regained control by sending troops to the city. Leo is soon succeeded as pope by his cousin who as Pope Clement VII endures the Sack of Rome, as rampaging German soldiers invade the city. Before Clement dies, he commissions Michelangelo to paint the “Last Judgment” in the Sistine Chapel.
