Stage West presents Sarah Ruhl’s wild yet thoughtful comedy about the way we memorialize the dearly departed – and how that remembering changes us – in Dead Man’s Cell Phone, directed by Jim Covault.
It’s a scene from a Hopper painting – a young woman sits in a nearly deserted cafe. A cell phone rings incessantly at the next table … but its owner does not answer. Frustrated by the noise, the woman soon discovers that the phone’s owner is dead, but that he’s left a lot of loose ends. She shortly finds herself on a journey literally to hell and back. This funny and touching play makes sharp, barbed points about our very real need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.
“Ruhl’s zany probe of the razor-thin line between life and death delivers a fresh and humorous look at the times we live in.” – Variety
“Satire is her oxygen … In her new oddball comedy, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Sarah Ruhl is forever vital in her lyrical and biting takes on how we behave.” – The Washington Post
