Newhart’s name is not only synonymous with television comedy (he did, after all, become a household name thanks to his self-named TV sitcoms) but with standup comedy as well. Years before he became a film actor and television star, he was a popular standup comedian with a cache of colorful characters, such as “The Driving Instructor” and “The Submarine Commander.” He’ll revive many of these characters – and share anecdotes about the absurdities of life – when he makes his first appearance at Bass Hall in nearly eight years.
