Q Cinema launches its 2008 calendar of cutting edge cinema with the North Texas premiere of the critically acclaimed Icelandic import, Eleven Men Out.
Ottar Thor (Bjorn Haraldsson) is a champion soccer star, handsome and arrogant, who after winning a game casually tells a journalist he’s gay. Imagine the surprise to his ex-wife, a former Miss Iceland; his teenage son, who’s already sullen and troubled; and his father, who happens to be Thor’s macho coach. This breezy, feisty dramatic comedy directed by Robert I. Douglas follows a man who, much to the chagrin of his family, exchanges one sort of domesticity for another. After choosing a same-sex partner, he is kicked off the championship team where fans (and management) expect players to be straight. But once a player, always a player, and Ottar is offered a spot on a team in a basement soccer league that soon has gay sportsmen from all over Iceland clamouring to join. The ensemble cast is pitch-perfect, as is the tone in this lively account of the surprising accomodations people are capable of making.
“Robert I. Douglas’ breakout feature is a non-pandering crowd-pleaser whose character quirks and small stabs at poignancy feel refreshingly earned. Perfs are perfectly in tune with the director’s deadpan yet boisterous tone. Design contribs hit the right gritty but polished note, while the tech package is first-rate.” – Dennis Harvey, Variety
