The Clean House

Thursday January 24, 2008 - Sunday February 24, 2008
Rated: PG

Stage West presents Sarah Ruhl’s wryly funny play, The Clean House, winner of the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

In this poignant comedy, Matilde, a young Brazilian woman, is hired by Lane and her husband Charles – both busy, high-powered physicians – as their new housekeeper. There’s just one hitch in the arrangement – Matilde hates to clean! She prefers to spend her time trying to dream up the funniest joke in the world.

But Lane’s sister, Virginia, loves to clean. In a secret deal with Matilde, Virginia arranges to take care of the housework behind Lane’s back, a scheme just too perfect to last. In the meanwhile, Charles meets the free-spirited Ana, a dying woman whose passion evokes a soulful grace in everyone it touches. Is laughter truly the best medicine? Or are some jokes indeed, “to die for”? Find out in this stunning play that Variety called a “…wondrously mad and moving work …”
