In the Dark

Saturday August 02, 2008 - Saturday August 09, 2008
Rated: NR

SceneShop presents its 12th festival of original works. This year’s spellbinding trio of entertainments will take place In the Dark.

In the Dark will offer three dramatic, challenging stories. The tales are not without humor, but laughter is not the point; instead, each piece aims to engage, energize, surprise … and maybe even unnerve the audience. As always, SceneShop’s minimalist style and the intimate venues will place the focus on the performances and the words:

  • Natalie Gaupp, a visiting professor in the UTA Theatre Arts department, will direct playwright Don Nigro’s “Lurker”, which documents the disturbing intersection of two unusual individuals.
  • Then Austin writer Robert Elrod offers a story of alienated youth – and maybe more – in his startling “Broken World.”
  • Steven Alan McGaw’s “Morrison Road” is based on a real experience shared by Eben Atwater who was, at one time, a detective in the state of Washington. In this fictionalized re-telling, two detectives in Knoxville get new information on a crime they thought would remain unsolved.

Familiar performers Charles Baker, Rachel Baker, Debbie Dacus, Melodee Halbach, Peggy Bott Kirby and Adam Whittington will join Atwater and McGaw in performing the three works, as will Tyler Cochran, Clinton Elledge and Becca Nordeen, all making their SceneShop debuts.

Pianist Bob Francis and trumpet player Ira Campbell, performing collectively as Willienatra, will team to provide live jazz music before the show and at intermission. They will be joined by guest vocalists on selected tunes.

Location: Arts Fifth Avenue

Admission: $12.00
