Magnolia at the Modern, in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, presents a preserved print of director Robert Wise’s 1949 masterpiece, The Set Up.

Unfolding in “real time,” Wise’s powerful film noir exposes the corruption of the boxing underworld and vilifies the mobsters who control it. Robert Ryan turns in a superb, award worthy performance as a veteran fighter who is unknowingly double-crossed. Lean, muscled, with a world-weary look on his once-handsome face, Ryan’s physical perfection in the role is matched by the economy of his acting style. The outstanding supporting cast includes Audrey Totter, George Tobias, Alan Baxter, and Wallace Ford.
