Rated: NR
Magnolia at the Modern, in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, presents a beautifully restored print of the dark classic, Brute Force (1947).
This brutally violent prison movie was directed by Jules Dassin (Riffi and Night and the City), famous for his visually innovative “noirs” – black and white movies that reflected the cynicism of an idealistic America disillusioned by the cruel realities of World War II.
Burt Lancaster stars as the tough convict who leads a group of inmates in a rebellion against a sadistic captain played by Hume Cronyn. The star-studded cast includes Charles Bickford, Howard Duff (in his film debut), Whit Bissell, Jeff Corey, Sam Levene, Roman Bohnen, and John Hoyt, plus Yvonne DeCarlo, Ella Raines, Ann Blyth, and 1940s fashion model Anita Colby as the women they love.
This film has not been rated. 98 minutes.
