Magnolia at the Modern, in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, presents a fully restored print of director Robert Flaherty’s acclaimed documentary, Moana (1926).

Hoping to repeat the financial success of his earlier project, Nanook of the North, Paramount Pictures sent Flaherty to Samoa to capture the traditional life of the Pacific islanders. While lush and exotically beautiful, this virtual paradise didn’t provide much in the way of dramatic tension and the resulting film – the first “docufiction” – was an artistic milestone but a commercial failure. Filmed over a two year period on the island of Savai’I, this poetic film is today considered a bona fide classic.
