Magnolia at the Modern, in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, presents a restored print of director Frank Borzage’s 1928 classic, Street Angel.
Janet Gaynor won the very first Academy Award in the category of Best Actress for her portrayal of the “good girl forced to go bad” in this beautifully photographed late-silent melodrama. She plays a young woman who is arrested for prostitution as she makes a desperate attempt to raise money for her mother’s medical care. Escaping from prison, she joins a circus and starts up a romance with a handsome young artist (Charles Farrell).
