Brighton Beach Memoirs

Friday January 29, 2010 - Sunday February 14, 2010
Rated: PG-13

Onstage in Bedford presents the first play in Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy, Brighton Beach Memoirs. Shane Peterman directs.

It’s 1937, and the future writer is a young teen living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene Jerome must cope with the mundane existence of family life in Brooklyn, including his formidable mother, overworked father, and worldly older brother Stanley.

Throw into the mix his widowed aunt Blanche and her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and Grandpa the Socialist and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

Rated PG-13.

Location: Trinity Arts Theater at Bedford Boys Ranch
Harwood Road at Forest Ridge Drive, Bedford, TX 76021
