Dallas Black Dance Theatre celebrates is the oldest, continuously operating professional dance company in Dallas. The ensemble, a contemporary modern dance company, consists of 14 professional dancers performing a mixed repertory of modern, jazz, ethnic and spiritual works by nationally and internationally known choreographers which include: Alvin Ailey, Talley Beatty, Donald Byrd, Alonzo King, Milton Myers, Elisa Monte, Donald McKayle, Kevin Jeff, Christopher Huggins, Jessica Lang, Bruce Wood, David Parsons and Darryl Sneed. The company’s dancers have studied, trained and performed with some of the pre-eminent performers and teachers in the American dance world.
Founded in 1976 by Ann Williams, the mission of Dallas Black Dance Theatre is to create and produce contemporary modern dance at its highest level of artistic excellence through performances and educational programs that bridge cultures and reach diverse communities. With an ever-expanding national and global audience, the company employs a diverse, multi-ethnic troupe of dancers performing for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. That diversity has propelled the company to prominence as the only full-time professional dance company in Dallas. The group's home season performances are held at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas.
Dallas Black Dance Theatre II, better known as DBDT II, consists of young dancers from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex as well as aspiring artists from Florida, Nebraska , Arkansas and Wisconsin . Since its inception, the company has grown in popularity and thrilled audiences with its fresh allure.
DBDT II performs works by recognized and emerging artists, creating a repertoire of modern, jazz, African, lyrical and spiritual works. The company has performed works by emerging and internationally recognized choreographers including Christopher Huggins, Allyne D. Gartrell, Kevin Veiga, Chantel Marrow-Adams, Edmond Giles, Darrell Cleveland, Ingrid Abbott, Nycole Ray and others.
DBDT Founder/Artistic Director, Ann Williams, started DBDT II in September 2000 to feature the best and most promising students of the Dallas Black Dance Academy. Over time, the company has grown in breadth, attracting artists who aspire to professional careers in dance. The purpose of the second company is to develop young artists and give them the opportunity to perform throughout the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area, as well as to better serve the community with dance performances of the highest artistic quality.
