Lyric Stage presents a revival of As Thousands Cheer, featuring sketches by Moss Hart and music by Irving Berlin.
This topical revue – the Depression era equivalent of Saturday Night Live and Politically Incorrect – was an enormous hit when it opened on Broadway in 1933. Moss Hart’s sketches are sharp, witty and hilarious, skewering such topics as celebrity divorces, voyeurism, politics (namely, an unpopular Republican leaving the White House), the real estate crash and tabloid headlines. Irving Berlin’s songs range from wry to satiric to poignant, and the score includes such classics as “Heat Wave,” “Easter Parade” and “Supper Time.”
