Greater Lewisville Theatre presents the classic musical comedy Gypsy: A Musical Fable, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. This production will be directed by H. Shane Hurst.
This musical fable is suggested by the memoirs of the famous stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee. But the play is really about her hard-driven, determined stage mother, Mama Rose. Rose first concentrates on her talented younger daughter, ‘Dainty’ June, leaving older, less talented Louise in the cold. When June runs away, Rose turns to Louise, who eventually does become the famous “Gypsy” of Minsky’s Burlesque. Rose is left by herself, her own show-business aspirations still unrealized.
